By accident a ripple is sent into the air. Inspiration begins at moments like this. The skill is to keep the clay spinning whilst off centre, or else to keep an awareness of the centre while centrifugal forces undulate around it. I stop while the clay is still rising, before gravity and entropy cause it to collapse and fall. The results can be viewed as indistinct, still forming. As water; still moving. Causing recognition in the unconscious of motion still occurring. Not static but dynamic.
The forms are tall bottle shapes that respectfully conform to traditional aesthetics for clay thrown on a wheel: they acknowledge enduring parallels between the ceramic and human vessel: foot, belly, shoulder, neck and lip are all observed.
I use a slightly glossy white glaze that has a fleshy quality to it. It seems to recreate the look of wet clay and enhance the viewers perception of being present at the moment of completion. I also use dry, grainy textured mineral glazes that together with the layering effect of the throwing rings remind me of the weathered gritstone rocks of the Peak District.
