Six years ago I decided to explore off centre throwing, excited by the expression of fluidity and movement that this revealed. I call the resulting tall bottles, Freeforms. As in music they exist despite contravening traditional rules.
I let the clay ripple and undulate, controlling it just enough to keep it rising. Between my manipulations and the wheel’s centrifugal force the water content of the clay creates characteristic forms. Careful observation of relative proportions result in freeform sketches with the vitality of the throwing process still evident.
Yet as units they remain still and quietly centred. As viewers we are asked to stop all superficial turmoil and watch the stream of life from its centre
